March is National Nutrition Month®

March has been recognized as National Nutrition Month for good reason! What began as a week-long campaign in 1973 evolved into an entire month by the year 1980. Americans have continued their focus on health, exercise and nutrition as a part of everyday life. With this annual event, we are reminded of the importance of informed food choices and the necessity of physical activity.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly American Dietetic Association) is the sponsor of this awareness campaign. Each year a different theme is the focus… for 2014, it’s “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.”

According to their research, “taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. While social, emotional and health factors also play a role, the foods people enjoy are likely the ones they eat most.”* This year’s goal will be to create healthy meals that follow dietary guidelines while combining taste and nutrition.
